American Tourists, Plate Glass Windows

June 28th, 2005 by Admin in Blog, Natalee Holloway, Press Coverage, Suspects

Yesterday our blogging cohort Dan Riehl mentioned in an entry titled Joran v d Sloot and the Plate Glass Window the story floated early on in the Holloway investigation about Joran van der Sloot’s history of violence. A rumor had surfaced that Joran threw someone through a plate glass window. That always stretched my credulity anyway, as such an act would be felonious assault anywhere, I’d think, but Dan, as usual, got the real lowdown:

Joran v d Sloot is said to have gotten into a fight with an 18 year old male American over possible advances toward a female. The male and female Americans were said to be visiting the island together.

At some point in the confrontation, Joran, much larger than the tourist, was reported to have thrown him against the plate glass window of a local Dunkin Donuts, however the window did not break.

This anecdote made me think, though… especially since Dan prefaced the story with these words; In one of what might be a pattern of confrontations with visiting American teenagers… — I wonder if there are some Americans out there, male or female, who have had past encounters while tourists on the island with van der Sloot, and if you think you have, are you willing to write or talk about it?

If you are willing to write about such an experience, please comment in the open thread Ian began here — Open Thread — or on this entry. Additionally, any stories of trouble had by an American tourist on Aruba would be of interest to me. Not to slam Aruba… but to underscore the reality of what we are looking at daily on the news. If you want your anonymity assured, you can e-mail me at steve.huff@gmail.com or use the Tips link on the upper right-hand side of this blog’s index page.

Personally I fear this investigation, with the release of Paul van der Sloot in particular, is sliding south, into a no-man’s land Americans are unfortunately all-too familiar with, and at the bottom of the slope is a cold-case file box. The recent development of Aruban Prime Minister Nelson Oduber officially requesting assistance from the Dutch government is heartening… but one wonders why it wasn’t done sooner. From an article published at FoxNews.com, titled Aruba PM: ‘We Are Doing Everything We Can’:

“I’m going to call the Dutch government. I’m going to try to reach one of the Dutch ministers to convince him of the necessity for all Aruba and our relation with the U.S. that we have to cooperate … to try to find Natalee,” Oduber said…

At the moment, it may be our tourist dollars are the most powerful bargaining chip we have to ensure that the search for Natalee Holloway doesn’t grow cold. Prime Minister Oduber is, I’m certain, utterly sincere in his desire to do whatever he can — but the people who most need satisfaction about the progress of this case — Natalee’s family — are not satisfied, not at all. Especially since the release of Paul van der Sloot. So Americans should consider this, should they be in a position to make a statement to Aruba about whether they want to spend tourist dollars there.

And again, if you have a story, let us know, through the tips link or e-mail. Please be certain to clarify what can and cannot be used in this blog — if you do not want your name or location revealed, please say so. I think all the bloggers involved in BlogsforNatalee understand very well the need for those who may feel they have an insight into this story that is illustrated by their own experience to feel their privacy is still assured.

Natalee Holloway’s Mother Devastated by Release

June 28th, 2005 by Admin in Blog, Natalee Holloway

Natalee’s mom is not a happy camper, and she thinks the Arubian authorities have lost control of this case and with it, any chance of finding Natalee. So do I! In fact, although I have seen no evidence to support my assumption, I am now begining to believe that Paul van der Sloot just might have more to do with Natalee’s disappearance than just helping or advising Joran in the cover-up. Remember, Paul van der Sloot had been at the casino that night too. Could he have seen Natalee? Is there more to the story than our culturally and politically correct little minds have imagined? Wasn’t Joran’s mom away that night? I ask – you comment.

AP – 1 hour, 43 minutes ago

ORANJESTAD, Aruba – Natalee Holloway’s mother said Tuesday she was devastated by the release of an Aruba judicial official in the case of her missing daughter because she was convinced he was hiding information.

“That was a huge blow to us,” Beth Holloway Twitty told ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “We were devastated.”

Holloway Twitty said she was convinced Paul van der Sloot knew something after she and others tracked him down soon after Natalee Holloway disappeared while celebrating her graduation from high school in Mountain Brook, Ala.

“I have never sat across from an individual in a well-ventilated room and seen a man sweat so profusely and only increasing in intensity as the 90 minutes (of interviewing) went on,” she told “Good Morning America.”

(…) “And to where it would drip on the table and his wife would have to get up and get a kitchen towel and wipe him and wipe the table … I have never seen anything like that.”

(…) She told CNN’s “American Morning” that she believes Paul van der Sloot “knows the answers.”

(…) “I want him to tell the truth,” she said. “He knows exactly what happened. He knows what, where, when, who, why and how.”

And according to the above AP article, Beth Holloway Twitty told ABC she sleeps every night in her daughter’s night shirt in the room where she was staying at the Holiday Inn. Can we possibly imagine the pain and agony that Beth suffers every single night? This lady is made of stern stuff, but how she can hold up to that kind of pain, night after night through the bungling mess that the Arubian authorities have allowed the investigation to become, rips at all of us parents.

If one of my children had disappeared under the circumstances that Natalee did, the Arubians would have to keep the van der Sloots in jail under protective custody, or keep me at Gitmo eating detainee meals of steak and lobster with a woman interrogator playing Britany Spears records(the worst music I can think of on the cuff) and reading loudly to me with quotes from Howard Dean or Ted Kennedy, or, God forbid, that idiot John Kerry or that squirrel – John Edwards. Ughhh…..
