Arubans to Elect New PM

September 23rd, 2005 by Ian in Aruba, Aruban Government

ORANJESTAD, Aruba Sep 22, 2005 — Arubans will chose their prime minister and all 21 seats in the parliament Friday in a race that has focused on immigration and frustration over stagnant salaries lagging behind inflation

Aruba, about the size of Washington D.C., also became the focus of international scrutiny this year after American teen Natalee Holloway disappeared on the final night of her high school graduation trip to the island.

Authorities detained three young men, a Dutch youth and two Surinamese brothers, who were the last people seen in public with the 18-year-old American. But all three were released for lack of evidence prompting anger at the government and calls for a tourism boycott in the United States.

Dave Holloway Distances Himself From Aruba Blacklisting Call

Hardbeatnews, NEW YORK, N.Y., Tues. Sept. 20, 2005: Dave Holloway, the father of missing Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, has distanced himself from calls by television psychologist, Dr. Phil McGraw, for a boycott of the island of Aruba.

In a story posted by the Aruba Tourist Board yesterday, Mr. Holloway was quoted as saying the call for boycott was “an independent decision of Beth and Dr. Phil.”

“I can speak for myself. I have family and friends who have regular jobs and I don’t see why a 100 thousand people should be penalized for the actions of possibly three or more individuals who are not even from this island,” he reportedly stated.
