Poll: Most in State Support Boycott
MONTGOMERY — Three-quarters of Alabamians back Gov. Bob Riley’s call for an American travel boycott of Aruba following Mountain Brook teenager Natalee Holloway’s disappearance, the results of a new statewide survey suggest.
The Mobile Register-University of South Alabama poll also found that about seven out of 10 respondents would not travel to the Caribbean island even if they won a free trip.
Riley announced the boycott earlier this month as a protest of Aruban officials’ alleged mishandling of the missing teen’s case.
Boycott Aruba?
B&W Boycott Aruba? As much as our community aches for the parents, relatives, and friends of Natalee Holloway, the decision to have Governor Bob Riley call for a national boycott of the Caribbean island places the state of Alabama in an unnecessary and rather embarrassing spotlight.
First, the decision appears to be politically rooted; Riley will soon be running for re-election in 2006. Secondly, there are approximately 1,000 missing persons in our state, almost 40 percent of them adolescents, and crime rates in our own cities and towns make Riley’s grandstanding hypocritical. Third, his hopes to attract enough attention for a national boycott will not happen. The State Department immediately rebuffed his proposal for an official statement, and it is uncertain if any number of his fellow governors will follow suit. Plus, most boycotts simply don’t work.
Boycott or no boycott, Aruba is not a country worth visiting, unless you enjoy traveling four hours to a destination with attractions that you could easily find much closer to home. With the exception of a cluster of tourist hotels on the western side of the island, all of which offer beautiful beaches, conditions on most of the island prove that travel brochures are mostly hype.
Holloway, Skeeters: Natalee’s Friends, Videotape (VIDEO)
Dave Holloway appeared on The Line Up to discuss the Aruba government wanting to re-interview Natalee’s friends. They have been demanding this interview for a long time. Jamie Skeeters also appeared on the show to discuss the taped interview he had with Deepak. He said he gave the tape to the Arubans and his computer harddrive to the FBI. It seems like this situation has been going on for quite some time.
