Special Report: A Father’s Determination, Part 2

November 22nd, 2006 by Debbie in Natalee's Family, Press Coverage

Meridian, Miss.
Wade Phillips

Most of Dave Holloway’s days are filled with work, that at his insurance office in Meridian, and the work he does to try to find his daughter. But every once in a while, all that work stops and he just thinks about his Natalee, and the life they shared.

“We’d spent a lot of time together. Her brother and her would come and we’d all just hang out,” said Holloway.

Dave and Natalee’s mother, Beth Twitty, divorced when Natalee was young, but she was still a major part of Dave’s life. And he recalls their every other weekend visits with fondness and a not a little bit of sadness. Dave says Natalee, even as a young girl, was driven to succeed.

“You didn’t have to tell her to do her homework; she did it. She strived to achieve, very good grades,” Holloway said.

And even during their weekend visits, she would always make sure her homework was done. But there was time for fun. Most of those weekends were spent watching movies with the family. Dave says they would sometimes venture out to the movie theater at the mall while she was here and always, always, she wanted to be in church. At the time, they attended Poplar Springs Drive Baptist.

“Every time she would come, we’d make sure she had her church clothes packed, and we’d attend church every week,” Holloway said.

If she’d make it back from Aruba, Natalee would likely have now been a sophomore at the University of Alabama, preparing for a career as a pediatrician. But Dave says he can’t allow himself to think too much about that.

Asked if he spends much time thinking about what might have been, Holloway says ‘yes’.

“But my mind is mostly set on trying to find out what happened,” he said.

And until he does that, it does not appear Dave Holloway will rest.

Special Report: A Father’s Determination

November 21st, 2006 by Debbie in Natalee's Family, Press Coverage

Meridian, Miss.
Wade Phillips

Eighteen months have not dulled the passion Dave Holloway has for finding out what happened to his daughter, Natalee. The Meridian businessman remains as committed as ever to solving the mystery.

After the fundraisers ended, after many of the yard signs have been pulled up, after the cable networks have stopped calling for interviews, there remains a father looking for his daughter.

“Some days you think you’re going to finally break the case, and some days you wonder, are we ever going to find out?” said Holloway.

That is still Dave Holloway’s story, a year and a half after his 18-year- old daughter went missing during her senior class trip to Aruba.

Newscenter 11 sat down with Holloway in his Meridian insurance office to talk about the case. He remains hopeful of a resolution.

Holloway says there have been developments in the case. They happened very quietly over the last few months.

The Dutch police have now taken over the investigation from Aruban authorities, a move Holloway believes should have been done months ago.

“I just hope they’re going to be able to find some answers,” Holloway said.

And the searches continue. Two months ago, Natalee’s family sent a cadaver dog to search an Aruban golf course. Just last week, a team searched some government property on the island.

“You get tips or leads or someone says you need to search here, and you cannot just let it pass by,” he said.

So far, nothing has come of any of those searches, but Holloway is not a man planning to give up any time soon.

“I don’t think, as a parent, you’ll ever give up and say I’ve done all I can do,” Holloway said.

Holloway admits the searching has taken a financial toll on him. After an initial surge of fundraising in the weeks after Natalee’s disappearance, there were several fundraisers. But now, he and the rest of Natalee’s family are personally funding the searches.

Twitty Says Tragedy Led to Mission

November 14th, 2006 by Debbie in Natalee's Family, Press Coverage

BRANNON STEWART
News staff writer

In front of more than 600 Samford University students Monday night, Beth Holloway Twitty shared intimate details of the nightmare that has evolved into her life’s mission.

“I never imagined that I would be traveling around telling people of how Natalee was kidnapped, raped and most likely murdered on the last night of her senior trip,” Twitty told the students inside Reid Chapel after a video tribute to her missing daughter.

Natalee Holloway was last seen on May 30, 2005, during a senior class trip to Aruba after graduation from Mountain Brook High School.

In a press conference before her speech, Twitty said there are not any new developments in the case.

“(Aruban officials) still say they’re doing searches, but we just don’t have any communication from them,” Twitty said. “It’s so frustrating.”

In the year and a half since her daughter has been missing, Twitty has founded the nonprofit International Safe Travels Foundation to educate the public about travel safety. She spoke to students at Samford about her spiritual journey since her daughter’s abduction, but she also stressed the importance of properly preparing for safe international travel.

“I’m not saying in any way that you shouldn’t travel outside this country,” Twitty said. “But you need to remember you do leave behind the privileges and rights that we’re accustomed to here in the U.S. and that we take for granted.”

Twitty said students should be proactive when traveling overseas, such as carrying emergency contact numbers of the U.S. government and becoming familiar with the laws of the countries they plan to visit.
